Auto Insurance
Auto insurance safeguards you from financial loss in the event of an accident. It is an agreement between you and the insurance company, where you commit to paying the premium, and in return, the insurer agrees to cover your losses as outlined in your policy.
When purchasing an auto insurance policy, you are selecting a combination of individual coverages, each designed to protect you from different types of losses.
By familiarizing yourself with these various coverages, you can choose which ones to incorporate into your personal insurance plan and determine the necessary coverage limits. About Auto Insurance Coverage
Bodily Injury Liability Coverage
Bodily Injury (BI) Liability Coverage provides payment, up to the coverage limits, for damages resulting from injury or death of others in an automobile accident for which you or the driver of your vehicle are legally accountable. It also covers your legal defense expenses. In many states, this coverage is required by law.
Property Damage Liability Coverage
Property Damage (PD) Liability Coverage provides payment, up to your policy limits, for damage to another person's vehicle or property resulting from an accident for which you or the driver of your vehicle is legally accountable. This coverage is also required in most states.
Medical Payments Coverage
Medical Payments Coverage provides payment, up to the your policy limits, for reasonable and necessary medical, hospital, and funeral expenses for you and your passengers who are injured or killed in an accident, regardless of fault. Typically, payments are restricted to one to three years following the accident. This coverage is generally optional in most states that do not have no-fault insurance systems.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Coverage
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists (UM/UIM) Coverage compensates for pain and suffering that isn't covered by medical, disability, and PIP, up to your policy limits. Underinsured motorist coverage helps pay for bodily injury to you or your family caused by someone whose liability insurance is inadequate. The definition of an underinsured motorist can differ depending on the state.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage provides payment, up to specified limits, for damage to your vehicle caused by theft, fire, vandalism, flooding, hail, or other hazards (excluding collision or overturning damage). If your vehicle is financed, this coverage is typically mandated by the lender.
Collision Coverage
Collision Coverage covers damages to your vehicle or a vehicle you are operating due to a collision or rollover, up the specified coverage limits. This type of coverage is typically required by lenders if you have a loan on your vehicle.
Rental Reimbursement
Rental Reimbursement covers up to a specified limit for rental vehicle expenses while your car is being repaired for damage included in your policy. If you would rather not pay for a rental vehicle on your own and need a car during the repair period, this coverage may be a good option for you.
Rental Reimbursement
Towing and Labor covers costs for services at the breakdown site or towing to a repair shop, including gas, oil, or battery delivery (excluding item costs). It may also cover locked keys or tire changes. Many auto club memberships provide similar services, possibly causing duplicate coverage.
